Traditional Values and Local Community in the Formal Educational System in Senegal Relevance Need and Barriers to the Integration of Local

This book explores the discourse of traditional values and local practices within the formal educational system in Senegal investigating how these cultural elements are present in the daily life of the community and integrated into formal schools and teaching. Studying the integration of concepts such as Jom (hard work pride dignity) Kersa (decency) Fule (self-respect) Mun (endurance) Teranga (hospitality) Kal (kinship) and Suture (Protection) it looks at how values are used perceived and understood within communities as well as their positive and negative connotations in the postcolonial context. Based on long-term participant education and utilizing a critical auto-ethnography lens it ultimately proposes that such concepts can be used to counterbalance the Western knowledge to which schoolchildren are mostly exposed connecting this to Bhaba’s system of the ‘Third Space”; a hybrid system to accommodate both educational systems for more relevant education. An informed study of the positive impacts of traditional cultural values on education in Senegal it will appeal to scholars researchers and practitioners of education in post-colonial Francophone countries with interests in culturally relevant education African education post-colonial education and international education. | Traditional Values and Local Community in the Formal Educational System in Senegal Relevance Need and Barriers to the Integration of Local

The Politics of Ephemeral Digital Media Permanence and Obsolescence in Paratexts

The Politics of Ephemeral Digital Media Permanence and Obsolescence in Paratexts

In the age of complex Tv of social networking and massive consumption of transmedia narratives a myriad short-lived phenomena surround films and TV programs raising questions about the endurance of a fictional world and other mediatized discourse over a long arc of time. The life of media products can change direction depending on the variability of paratextual materials and activities such as online commentaries and forums promos and trailers disposable merchandise and gadgets grassroots video production archives and gaming. This book examines the tension between permanence and obsolescence in the production and experience of media byproducts analysing the affections and meanings they convey and uncovering the machineries of their persistence or disposal. Paratexts which have long been considered only ancillary to a central text interfere instead with textual politics by influencing the viewers’ fidelity (or infidelity) to a product and affecting a fictional world’s life expectancy. Scholars in the fields of film studies media studies memory and cultural studies are here called to observe these byproducts' temporalities (their short form and/or long temporal extention their nostalgic politics or future projections) and assess their increasing influence on our use of the past and present on our temporal experience and consequently on our social and political self-positioning through the media. | The Politics of Ephemeral Digital Media Permanence and Obsolescence in Paratexts

Personal Identity

Personal Identity

Who am I? What is a person? What does it take for a person to persist from one time to another? What is the relation between the mind and the body? These are just some of the questions that constitute the problem of personal identity one of the oldest and most fundamental of philosophical questions. Personal Identity Third Edition is a clear and comprehensive introduction to these questions and more. Harold Noonan places the problem of personal identity in the context of more general puzzles about identity discussing the major historical theories and more recent debates. The book also includes essential historical and philosophical background to the problem of personal identity as found in the arguments of Locke Reid and Hume among others. The third edition of Personal Identity has been thoroughly reviewed in light of advances in the latest literature and research. This includes significant revision to the important problems of the simple and complex distinction and its relation to reductionism; temporal parts; and the distinction between perdurance and endurance theorists. Noonan also includes an up to date examination of personal identity and memory and personal identity and animalism particularly the work of Shoemaker Parfit Olson and hybrid theorists. Including helpful chapter summaries and annotated further reading at the end of each chapter Personal Identity Third Edition is essential reading for all students of philosophy of mind and metaphysics as well as students interested in ethics.

A History of Architectural Modelmaking in Britain The Unseen Masters of Scale and Vision

A History of Architectural Modelmaking in Britain The Unseen Masters of Scale and Vision

Architectural modelmakers have long carried out their work hidden behind the scenes of architectural design and in presenting a history of architectural modelmaking in Britain for the first time this book casts a new light on their remarkable skills and achievements. By telling the story of the modelmakers who make architectural models rather than architects who commission and use them this book seeks to celebrate their often-overlooked contribution to the success and endurance of the architectural model in Britain over the past one hundred and forty years. Drawing from extensive archival research and interviews with practicing and retired modelmakers this book traces the complete history of architectural modelmaking in Britain from its initial emergence as a specialist occupation at the end of the nineteenth century through to the present day. It reveals the legacy of John Thorp the first professional architectural modelmaker in Britain who opened his business in London in 1883 and charts the lives and careers of the innovative and creative modelmakers who followed him. It examines the continually evolving materials tools and processes of architectural modelmaking and outlines the profound ideological economic and technological influences that have shaped the profession’s development. Illustrated with over one hundred photographs of architectural models from previously undocumented archives this book will be of great interest to architectural modelmakers academics and historians as well as anyone with an interest in architectural history and modelmaking. | A History of Architectural Modelmaking in Britain The Unseen Masters of Scale and Vision

Floral Art Of Japan

Floral Art Of Japan

First published in 2005. Japanese flower arrangement is much more than an elegant amusement - it is an expression of what the Japanese call furyu - to turn away from strife and to lose oneself in the joys of peace and nature. It is the opposite of that other key aspect of Japanese culture - Bushido the way of the warrior. The virtues of Bushido are persistence fidelity endurance bravery and activity - those of furyu are subtlety gentleness restraint and repose. That they see no inconsistency or contradiction between these two ways of living is one of the most interesting characteristics of the Japanese people. This volume is a succinct and comprehensive guide to the history theory and practice of this exquisite art. It explains the three fundamental forms of Japanese flower arrangement - Shin Gyo and So as well as the proper arrangement of the tokonoma the alcove where the flowers are displayed. It explains how one has to 'see' the expressions and emotions in blossoms and branches to achieve the most harmonious combinations and gives the history of the art going back to the Ashikaga Shogunate describing the two great classical schools of Japanese flower arrangement - the formal (rikkwa) and the natural (nageire) styles. It also deals with two new schools - the heaven-earthman (ten-chi-jin) and literati (bunjin-ike) styles - concluding with an illustrated chapter on how to arrange flowers. This is a book full of timeless serenity and beauty. | Floral Art Of Japan

Strategic Responses to Domestic Contestation The EU Between Politicisation and Depoliticisation

Strategic Responses to Domestic Contestation The EU Between Politicisation and Depoliticisation

How have EU-level actors responded to the increase in salience and contestation across the member states? This volume explores and explains the actors’ strategic responses and emphasises that domestic pressure has triggered both depoliticisation and politicisation. Long gone are the times when EU decisions left citizens indifferent and when the supranational was largely irrelevant for public opinion and electoral politics across the member states. Instead a string of existential crises has struck and unsettled the Union over more than a decade. These crises have politicised Europe tested the endurance of the supranational system to its core and put EU-level actors under unprecedented pressure. This volume explores how and why EU-level actors respond to the various sometimes competing ‘bottom-up’ demands and challenges the view that domestic contestation necessarily limits EU-level room for manoeuvre. Instead contributions show that domestic pressure can be perceived as either constraining or enabling with responses therefore ranging from the restrained to the assertive. Driven by the survival of the Union by the preservation of their own powers and by different perceptions of domestic demands actors will choose to politicise or depoliticise decision-making behaviour and policy outcomes at the supranational level. The volume concludes that whilst domestic pressure triggers supranational responses such responses should not be assumed to be restraining; they may equally be empowering including for European integration itself. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of European Public Policy. | Strategic Responses to Domestic Contestation The EU Between Politicisation and Depoliticisation

Ergonomics for Rehabilitation Professionals

Ergonomics for Rehabilitation Professionals

Despite the apparently distinct differences between the disciplines of ergonomics and rehabilitation they deal with the same issues although at different ends of the spectrum. Keeping this in mind Ergonomics for Rehabilitation Professionals explores their philosophies and goals their parallel divergent and complementary aspects. It traces the origin of each field and examines the role of ergonomics in rehabilitation. The book begins with a theoretical and conceptual review of ergonomics and its role in rehabilitation. It covers anthropometry and its impact on human biomechanics allowing readers to grasp complex concepts visualize what forces are acting where and understand the consequence of this force. A chapter on tissue mechanics provides an understanding of the effect of the overall load on the tissues and a rationale for possible mechanisms of injury that can be used to design prevention and treatment methods. The book explores the relevant physiological issues looking at the energy cost of activities and the data on strength and endurance. It discusses whole body biomechanics using an approach that supplies intuitive understanding of the effects of force gravity and physiological variables in an integrated manner. Addressing theoretical underpinnings with scientific rigor the book covers a broad range of topics always emphasizing design in rehabilitation. The editor’s organization of the material develops concepts in concentric circles with increasing radii sequencing ideas and exploring them from simple to complex. This selection of topics from two vast and seemingly diverse disciplines provides the tools for setting realistic goals and developing the strategies to achieve them.

Social Sciences The Big Issues

Social Sciences The Big Issues

Fully revised and updated the fourth edition of Social Sciences: The Big Issues explores key debates about how we live our personal domestic and emotional lives at a time of enormous previously unimaginable change and disruption including a pandemic that locked down households and economies. Since the third edition everyone’s life has changed. The pandemic – at least temporarily – stopped social life as we knew it and virtually forced governments to close down their economies. This is where this edition of The Big Issues starts. Staying at home posed a radical departure from routine life but reactions to Covid-19 have exposed the endurance of particular social relations – especially inequalities – which characterize societies worldwide. A few of the new big issues covered in this edition include: Changing selves and personal lives in light of racism and sexual and identity politics in a pandemic Changing patterns of consumption in relation to market production and what it means for climate change Changing intersections of citizenship migration and globalization in the context of the virus crossing borders and both the opportunities and sources of inequality involved Changing ideas about power politics and populism in the aftermath of Brexit Building on the strong foundation of this well-loved text this fully revised fourth edition explores how big issues and social forces intersect to create both change and evidence of continuity especially of social inequalities. It provides a clear accessible introduction to the ideas and approaches of the social sciences across a range of disciplines including sociology psychology and politics. | Social Sciences The Big Issues
