Asian Expansions The Historical Experiences of Polity Expansion in Asia

Asian Expansions The Historical Experiences of Polity Expansion in Asia

Asia as we know it today is the product of a wide range of polity expansions over time. Recognising the territorial expansions of Asian polities large and small through the last several millennia helps rectify the fallacy long-held and deeply entrenched that Asian polities have been interested only in the control of populations not in expanding their command of territory. In countering this misapprehension this book suggests that Asian polities have indeed been concerned with territorial control and expansion over time whether for political or strategic advantage trade purposes defence needs agricultural expansion or increased income through taxation. The book explores the historical experiences of a set of polity expansions within Asia specifically in East and Southeast Asia and by examining the motivations mechanisms processes validations and limitations of these Asian territorial expansions reveals the diverse avenues by which Asian polities have grown. The chapters draw on these historical examples to highlight the connections between Asian polity expansion and centralised political structures and this aids in a broader and more comprehensive understanding of Asian political practice both past and present. Through these chapter studies and the integrative introduction the book interrogates key concepts such as imperialism and colonialism and the applicability and relevance of such terminology in Asian contexts both historical and contemporary. Comparisons and contrasts with European historical expansions are also suggested. This book will be welcomed by students and scholars of Asian history as well as by those with an interest in Asian interactions international relations polity expansion Asia-Europe historical comparisons and globalisation. | Asian Expansions The Historical Experiences of Polity Expansion in Asia

Urban Expansion and Food Security in New Zealand The Collapse of Local Horticulture

Urban Expansion and Food Security in New Zealand The Collapse of Local Horticulture

This book examines suburban development in New Zealand and its conflict with and impact on local horticulture and food security. Drawing on an ethnographic study of Auckland’s rapidly expanding urban periphery combined with comparative case studies from California in the USA and Victoria in Australia the book examines how the profit-making strategies of property developers and landowners drastically reshapes work and life at the edge of cities. With a significant portion of the world's croplands lying adjacent to cities the accelerating pace of urban sprawl across the planet places unprecedented pressure on the productivity and even existence of these vital food bowl regions. The book examines how the demand for more land for development at the urban periphery collides with concerns over local food security and the protection of ecosystem services. It analyses land use policy historical records and physical patterns of development alongside participant observation of local events. It combines this with interviews with government officials property developers landowners local residents and horticulturists. By combining these narratives of the hectic and lucrative business of suburban property development with the collapse of local horticulture this book shows how the realignment of the New Zealand's interests of financial profitability over other concerns led to the transformation of urban peripheries from a productive food bowl to an investment vehicle. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of urban food and agriculture urban planning and development and rural-urban studies. | Urban Expansion and Food Security in New Zealand The Collapse of Local Horticulture

Media as Politics in South Asia

Media as Politics in South Asia

The dramatic expansion of the media and communications sector since the 1990s has brought South Asia on the global scene as a major center for media production and consumption. This book is the first overview of media expansion and its political ramifications in South Asia during these years of economic reforms. From the puzzling liberalization of media under military dictatorship in Pakistan to the brutal killings of journalists in Sri Lanka and the growing influence of social media in riots and political protests in India Nepal and Bangladesh the chapters analyse some of the most important developments in the media fields of contemporary South Asia. Attentive to colonial histories as well as connections within and beyond South Asia in the age of globalization the chapters combine theoretically grounded studies with original empirical research to unravel the dynamics of media as politics. The chapters are organized around the three frames of participation control and friction. They bring to the fore the double edged nature of publicity and containment inherent in media thereby advancing postcolonial perspectives on the massive media transformation underway in South Asia and the global South more broadly. For the first time bringing together the cultural regulatory and social aspects of media expansion in a single perspective this interdisciplinary book fills the need for overview and analytical studies on South Asian media. | Media as Politics in South Asia
