The Amber Gold Arborvitae has more horizontal branches than most conifers, which gives its foliage thicker density and texture. A full standard, deciduous tree with a trunk which is usually upright right to the top, surrounded by light branches that fall gracefully at the ends The tree itself is native to Europe and Asia, even reaching the mountains of Turkey, the Caucasus and Northern Iran. In the first 2-3 years the bark is a greyish-brown but becomes chalk white and flakes off in thin stripes. The leaves are long and pale green but a beautiful yellow in the autumn. A variegated form of the Box Elder, the variegated pinnate leaves consist of green centers splashed at the edges with salmon pink, that later turns cream. Leaf stems are a dark, pinkish red whilst the pale grey of the branches look attractive in winter. Prone to shooting from the base it can be grown as a large shrub, though its ultimate shape will be oval. It will grow well in full sun or light shade and can cope with most soils though it likes free draining ground. The best displays of foliage occur when it has been pruned back hard in the winter Make sure to follow the advice of pruning group 1. Like many variegated trees it is prone to reversion, so any branches with purely green leaves will need to be removed completely. The variegated leaves of this tree make it a nice plant to use to contrast with darker plants. It can look very nice when planted with blue conifers such as Cupressus Arizonica Fastigiata. The Platanus x Acerifolia, also more commonly known as the London Plane, is the same plant as the Hispanica.  It has a rather interesting history. The actual plant species was formed by accidental hybridisation due to the close proximity of P. Orientalis and P. Occidentalis. It is said to have happened in Spain during the mid 17th century but there are beliefs that state it happened in Vauxhall Gardens in London where John Tradescant the Younger discovered the tree. The actual plant itself has an inconspicuous flower but starts to grow fruit in the winter time. Well drained soil is recommended for this plant and make sure to avoid planting in the vicinity of other buildings.
