Totem Cypress / Totem Pole (Cupressus Sempervirens Totem)

Totem Cypress / Totem Pole (Cupressus Sempervirens Totem)

A smaller and more delicate version of the Italian Cypress that creates a modern feel. The Totem Cypress does not grow as tall or as fast as the “Pyramidalis” Italian Cypress. It also has a brighter green (although this can dull if planted in areas of Northern England). Due to its delicate nature and preference to warm and dry climates, we would not recommend this tree be used in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Totem Cypress look great along paths and driveways, or when combined with other ‘geometrically shaped’ garden features such as square patios and circular fountains. All conifers are known for their hardiness and resilience against the elements. We often think of them being heavily covered with snow during the winter, but they can look equally as bold and impressive against a bright blue summer sky. Conifers get their name from the "cones" that they produce – which come in all shapes and sizes. Conifer leaves are evergreen and will either be needle-shaped or scale-like. Latin Name: Cupressus Sempervirens Totem English Name: Totem Cypress, Totem Pole Species: Conifer Genus: Cupressaceae (Cypress) Foliage Type: Evergreen. Foliage: Green. Flower: Brown Spherical Cones. Flowering Period: Spring. Suggested Location: Outdoor. Suggested Soil Type: Well-Drained. Chalk. Clay. Loam. Sand. Suggested Exposure to Sunlight: Full Sunlight. Maintenance: No pruning required, but can be trimmed and shaped as required. Growth Habit: Upright/Narrow Columnar. Growth Speed: Medium (30cm to 60cm per year). Cupressus sempervirens

Cupressus sempervirens

If you've ever travelled around the Mediterranean, particularly the south and Italy, you will have seen Italian Cypress Trees, or Cupressus sempervirens dotted around the hills and in formal gardens. Instantly recognisable for their tall, slender form, they're breathtaking and wonderfully elegant - now grow one for yourself! Not to be confused with the closely related Leylandii, this Italian Cypress has a naturally narrow and dense growth habit, growing arrow straight. Completely hardy in the UK and evergreen, looking magnificent all year round. Preferring a sunny location in well-drained soil, it's drought tolerant, easy to look after, and reasonably fast growing.Although the branches of Cupressus sempervirens grow vertically without training, these trees will benefit from regular clipping, in the same way as most conifers. The more they're clipped, the tighter and denser they'll become. This also reduces the risk of any branches falling out of shape, even from the weight of winter snow. Any branches that do bend out of shape can be pruned out or tied back into position.Italian Cypress trees will bring a classic Mediterranean look to your garden. They're spectacular in groups and in borders, adding height without taking up too much growing space, and they look splendid in large pots on a terrace or either side of a door or gate. These graceful beauties always draw admiring glances, and they only get better with age!Supplied as an established tree, 90-120cm tall in a 20cm pot, ready to plant.

Attractive and resilient, this evergreen tree has eye-catching blueish white foliage. Their needle-shaped leaves are aromatic and they grow in dense bunches, giving them a furry appearance. All conifers are known for their hardiness and resilience against the elements. The Oedipus Complex Focus of the Psychoanalysis-Anthropology Debate

The Oedipus Complex Focus of the Psychoanalysis-Anthropology Debate

This book examines the contentious relationship between psychoanalysis and anthropology as it has played out in disputes surrounding the Oedipus complex. Here Éric Smadja explores the complicated historical and epistemological conditions leading up to the emergence of the conflict between the two disciplines. He considers the origins of each science the creation of the Oedipus complex and the place role and influence of Freud’s key and controversial work Totem and Taboo both in the history of psychoanalysis and as it connects with anthropology internationally. Focusing on such key figures as Bronislaw Malinowski Ernest Jones Franz Boas Georges Devereux Emile Durkheim Claude Levi-Strauss and Jacques Lacan Smadja charts the course of the debate as it unfolded during the twentieth century and tracks its contemporary status of the debate with a focus on figures in both France and the United States. Discussing the divergences and convergences between the two fields he compares and contrasts their historical epistemological and methodological features and reflects on the new acculturative disciplines emerging from their interaction. The book concludes with a look at what the conflictual history of these two human sciences can tell us about the history of ideas and their processes and modes of communication. Exploring a dispute which reaches back to the very beginnings of psychoanalysis and anthropology The Oedipus Complex will appeal to psychoanalysts in practice and in training psychotherapists and academics and students of psychoanalytic studies anthropology and the history of ideas. | The Oedipus Complex Focus of the Psychoanalysis-Anthropology Debate
