With this piece, the composer wanted to create a dream-like experience for the listener. Other Lives

Other Lives is works perfectly for a competition but can also be programmed as concert work. The dark chords at the beginning of the piece are derived from “Der Doppelgänger”, one of Franz Schubert’s late songs. After a short development the music begins to accelerate and find its own shape, gradually moving away from the introduction. The entire first part, “Rage”, has an intensely agitated character. The ensuing “Reflection” turns back to the initial chord progression, before a series of interspersing solos explore time and space at a slower pace. After another musical surge, the music is brought close to silence and then gives way to the third part, “Redemption”.Here, a widely spaced sound field contains a remote allusion to another work by Schubert “Rückblick”. After this farewell, an abstract musical transformation triggers an emotional change, as the initial motifs are now presented in their inversed form in order to create a much brighter harmonic landscape. Moreover, in the last part of the piece, “Renewal”, the grim, tense atmosphere of the first part is transformed into a great energy. Other Lives was commissioned by the Valaisia Brass Band.

Horoscope : 12 Pieces for Piano Solo

HOROSCOPE is a collection of studies and performance pieces. In order to learn specific techniques, it is essential to put them into continual practice. For this reason, Bert Appermont has put together a group of interesting and musical-soundingstudies, which directly lead into the pieces themselves. He assigned each composition to a different sign of the zodiac and chose two characteristics per sign. As the sequence of the pieces is determined by the order of the zodiac, they are notarranged in order of difficulty. Lots of fun practising and playing!

This composition was commissioned by the Musique Municipale d’Ingwiller, for the occasion of their 150th anniversary. The source of inspiration for this work was the municipality of Ingwiller in the French region, Alsace. The title of the work refers to the many buildings there that are made of red sandstone, and to the ‘Schlembe’, a train connecting Ingwiller with Bouxwiller for sixty years. It consists of 4 movements, all related to the city of Ingwiller and its history. According to the tale, a shepherd boy, Hennes, cared for his animals on the alpine pastures, but many of the animals fell ill with a terrible plague and died. The mountain spirit appeared to Hennes out of the mists of Säntis and so the story unfolds… The music of The Spell follows the narrative of this legend, in which musical motifs are assigned to the essential elements of the story, a technique seen in late romantic repertoire by composers such as Wagner or Richard Strauss.The Spell is a musical interpretation of an old legend from the Alpstein, a mystical mountain area in the east of Switzerland. Microtopia : Papilionoidea - Hymenoptera

Microtopia was inspired by the wondrous nature film Microcosmos, in which the insect world is magnified into large-aslife tableaux. The title of the work is a combination of the words microscopic (micro) and biotope (topia), in reference to this weird and wonderful world. From the original four-part composition, Bert Appermont made an instrumentation of two parts for woodwind ensemble and optional string bass, harp and mallet percussion, Papilionoidea (the butterflies) and Hymenoptera (the wasps). The music aims to be suggestive rather than produce a literal evocation or depiction. I am convinced that everybody can imagine different scenes and moods when listening to these two parts, from fluttering butterflies to aggressive wasps. The colourful orchestration and harmonisation really work in this respect. The use of trills, atmospheric chords and irregular times (five-eight) gives the work an unusual character.

This work was inspired by the 3rd/4th century legend of Margaret of Antioch. Margaret was very devout, and lived as a shepherdess in the countryside. When the city prefect Olybrius proposed to her, on the condition that she would give up her faith, she refused and was eventually put to death. To evoke the archaic early-medieval atmosphere, Bert Appermont has used two Gregorian Kyries. In addition, influences from old music (such as old modes and parallel fifths) and Carl Orff’s work are present. Sounds of the City : 15 Easy Pieces for Piano Solo

This album contains fifteen easy compositions for piano solo, inspired by the city: from honking cars, and dark alleys to imposing skyscrapers…one of the pieces is even based on mobile phone ringtones. The album is aimed at students who have beenplaying the piano for three to four years; the level of difficulty varies for each piece some are slightly easier, or trickier, than the others. Each work has its own specific mood and style, and where possible I have also tried to incorporatevarious techniques or characters within one composition. This music would make a suitable competition selection, as well as appropriate concert or exam pieces.

El Cid : Spanish Fantasy for Alto Saxophone & Piano

El Cid was the name of the legendary knight and folk hero Rodrigo D az de Vivar Cameador, the man who never lost a duel. After a typically Spanish opening, a slower section follows in which the composer makes reference to Albinoni’s Adagio and to the slow movement from Joaqu n Rodrigo’s Concierto d’Aranjuez. The music is whipped up with Spanish passion at the close, and castanets are a must!
