Book Of Visions

The 35-minute orchestral suite, Book of Visions, was co-commissioned by the Orchestre National de Belgique, NHK Symphony Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and received its premiere in Brussels on 15 April2005, conducted by Mikko Franck.The work consists of four orchestral tales of night, fire, love and fate. Each aims to extract the essence of the phenomenon, not in a descriptive way but rather as perceived by thecomposer metaphysically, an approach akin to that of his series of ‘Angel’ works. Although no exact narrative is intended, the final tale inevitably suggests autobiographical elements, as its composition was violentlyinterruptedby a near-fatal heart attack in January 2004.

Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes for solo Piano were composed within a relatively short space of time during the winter of 1932/3. Just like in his later work, 24 Preludes and Fugues (Opus 87), thepieces in 24 Preludes form a cycle in each of the 12 major and minor keys. Therefore, even though these Preludes are often performed separately, or as selections made into a group, the manner oftheir composition implies that they are better perceived as a set. Nevertheless, the memorable individuality of the clearly defined mood and character of each of these 24 short pieces easily allows for selectiveperformancechoices.
