The composer Andreas N. Tarkmann, who began his musical training in the Hanover Boys’ Choir, has composed new folk song arrangements for the Liederprojekt. These are scored for four-part mixed chorus with brass quintet or piano duet accompaniment. These highly attractive compositions capture the essence of folk song style, interpreted with great artistry. They are not just simple strophic songs: instead, the well-known melodies are given novel accompaniments which add much to the text and content, commenting on it musically. Tarkmann has grouped together folk songs with common themes, and has woven these together in the style of a medley (nocturnes, animal songs,craftsmen’s songs, sailors’ songs), so that a performance has more of an overarching form. The scorings and accompaniments are varied: there are solo passages, sometimes the chorus sings unaccompanied, but mainly with accompaniment for piano duet. The oratorio Passions by Homilius were among the last compositions of their kind in the 18th century. In an oratorio Passion the chorus is restricted mainly to singing the chorales and the interjections of the crowd; only the conclusion of a Passion provides an opportunity for an extensive choral movement. In the St. John Passion the final chorus emphasizes the supreme importance of the Crucifixion as the climax of St. John's Gospel. The free elements of the composition take the forms customary at the time: da capo arias are predominant.

Missa ad maiorem Dei gloriam

Wolfram Buchenberg’s Missa ad maiorem Dei gloriam in Latin for big band, chorus, and baritone is a good half hour in duration. In the Kyrie the composer takes as his theme people’s deep-seated fear and its overcoming through faith: the Gloria and Sanctus/Benedictus express overwhelming joy, and the “Dona nobis” in the Agnus Dei dies away in a mood of weightless floating. This absolutely thrilling setting of the mass, influenced by Latin jazz, suitable for concert or equally for liturgical performance, requires a large, well-rehearsed chorus and big band.

Today Beethoven’s Ode to Joy is one of the most popular works of classical music worldwide – celebratory and powerful music which is an expression of joy, community, protest, and thanks. This catchy arrangement of Schiller’s and Beethoven’s Ode for chorus and piano, or optionally for chorus, band and wind instruments by Peter Schindler, stands for all these emotions. Brass riffs, jazzy harmonies, a choral setting in one to three parts, and an adaptation of the text are all highlights of specialmusical moments which the whole audience can join in at the end!
