Distler: The Christmas Story

The Story of Christmas op. 10 was one of the most popular religious works of the young Hugo Distler, and with its moving tenderness it is one of the most attractive oratorios which can be performed by any and all a cappella ensembles during Advent or Christmastime. The complete story is told by a narrator, which Hugo Distler employed after the manner of an early baroque model of a passion, is performed by an a cappella choral ensemble. On the present recording, the Athesinus Ensemble Berlin, which also provided the soloists in the oratorio, performed with convincing expressivity, warmth, flawless intonation and an extreme vocal flexibility.

In the choral world Hans Schanderl is known as an innovative composer. The works recorded on the present CD show that he not only composes in the classical-conventional mode, but he also allows a variety of vocal means of expression and, often, non-European elements to flow into his music. His compositions thrive on the humorous and playful interplay of vocal contrasts and rhythmic variants, as well as from an always clear organized structure. The Polski Chór Kameralny and its conductor, Jan Lukaszewski, are regarded as one of the leading new music ensembles today. With the choir’s unique sense for the different facets of Schanderl’s compositions, perfect intonation andvocal homogeneity, the Polski Chór Kameralny demonstrates impressively its extreme choral flexibility and virtuosity.

Hohes Lied

The polyphonic choral arrangements by Clytus Gottwald, the founder and only director of the Schola Cantorum Stuttgart, are legendary and in the meantime belong to the established repertoire of many professional concert choirs. Frieder Bernius juxtaposed four of Gottwald’s most well-known arrangements for multiple voices of works by Debussy and Ravel, as well two original compositions from Jean-Yves Daniel-Lesur [1908 2002] and Carl Christian Fasch [1736 1800]. Fasch composed his ambitious 16-voice Mass as a cornerstone for the founding of the famous Berliner Singakademie. To be sure, in its extreme use of writing for multiple voices the Mass refers to the great Romantradition of Palestrina from the 16th century, but at the same time makes use of the new possibilities of choral sound pointing towards the 19th century. The Gottwald arrangements of Schumann’s Vier Gesängen after poems by von Eichendorff a world premiere recording round out this CD of discriminating and fascinating repertoire.
