The Herald Angels Sing. Choral music for Christmas

Christmas belongs, together with Passion, to the most important and highest of Christian feasts: the celebration of the birth of the Redeemer Jesus Christ, the Feast of the Holy Family. Already, since the Middle Ages in many places singing and music making were a welcome part of Christmas: in the church, under the Christmas tree, at the doors of houses, in squares and streets and this throughout western culture. It is interesting to follow how each country has contributed its own forms and genres, both in the field of art music, as well as that of traditional folk music. The present CD offers an impression of the variety of Christmas singing through selected choral settingsand melodies ranging, for example, from Germany, Italy and England. Many song settings have been newly arranged, beginning with straightforward, in part, romantic settings, via majestic choruses with varying scorings, through settings which use modern jazz elements. Thus the Junge Vokalensemble Hannover, under the direction of Klaus-Jürgen Etzold, presents listeners not only the widest geographic variety, but also attractive music for Christmas.

In 1930 Ottorino Respighi composed his Lauda per la Nativit del ­Signore, the only sacred choral work among his entire opus. In this hymn of praise to the miracle of Christmas, majestic sounding choral passages alternate with the soloistic roles of Maria, the Angel and the shepherd, accompanied by the sound of pastoral instruments. The music is varied, containing stylistic elements ranging from the late romantic to neo baroque, as well as echoes of Gregorian chant. In this recording by the Rundfunkchor Berlin, under the direction of Nicolas Fink and Maris Sirmais, Respighi’s composition is presented together with beautiful Christmas pieces by Poulenc, Sandström, Kaminskyand Raphael. Like Respighi, in their compositions they employed various techniques and harmonies from previous musical eras.

It contains all the elements which aesthetics of the time demanded of a large-sclae sacred composition: nobility, dignity, polyphonic and concertante choruses, deeply-felt arias, and a great concluding double fugue. The festive music Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes was written during Bach’s later years as director of music in Hamburg. The Basler Madrigalisten, L’arpa festante and well-known soloists,under the direction of Fritz Näf, give a commanding and enthralling interpretation of these works by C. P. E. Bach.

Shortly after the publication of the first volume of Lore-Ley for mixed choir, we began receiving a lot of inquiries for such a collection for women’s and girl’s choirs. Soon, a sequel, Lore-Ley II, was published with over 130 lieder for this scoring. The Pfälzische Kurrende, under the direction of Carola Bischoff a two-time winner of the German choral competition has now recorded 29 of these Volkslieder [folk song] classics. Many of these arrangments by well-known contemporary composers were specially written for this collection and are recorded here for the first time. In addition to examples with classical harmony there are selections with modern elements ofstyle, also in a light, jazzy manner. The CD should stimulate the singing of folk songs and offer choral conducters an aural impression of these choral collections already published.

In music history the name of Johann Christian Schieferdecker [1679 1732] appears mostly as a footnote, although he shared the orchestra pit during opera performances with many of the greats and worked with them, including Reinhard Keiser, Johann Mattheson and George Frideric Handel! Following his tenure at the Hamburger Gänemarkt-Oper he succeeded Buxtehude at the Marienkirche in Lübeck. None of his operas have survived today. His sacred music output includes three cantatas for solo bass and strings which are presented here for the first time, performed in a very impressive interpretation by Klaus Mertens and the Hamburger Ratsmusik. With this lively, declamatory and dramaticmusic Schieferdecker transports the musical idea of opera into the church. The CD is rounded off with some of the composer’s instrumental music. Here creative French and Italian stylistic elements are combined with each other.

This work displays a mastery of the polyhonic style and though the use of certain pre-classical, "modern" elements its various forms never sound archaic, rather the work presents a synthesis leading to a unique style. For a performance during the Christmas season, Christmas hymns can be inserted between each of the individual movements. Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber : Vesperae longiores ac breviores

Not later than his appointment as Court Music Director of the Archbishop of Salzburg in 1684 did the composition of sacred vocal music become an official obligation for Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber [1644 1704]. Today his extensive sacred works stand somewhat in the shadow of his instrumental music [perhaps with the exception of the Missa Salisburgenis] and this although many of the treasured stylistic elements of his instrumental music can also be found in his masses, psalm settings and vespers. Thus the litany Vesperae longiores ac breviores, is characterized by the striking virtuoso use of both violins. In a live production Simon Carrington, co-founder of the famous King’sSingers, and the Yale Schola Cantorum have made this intimately scored, yet grandiose work known and accessible to the music lovers and enthusiasts. It shows Biber at the height of his creative powers. On the present recording the Vesper is complimented by vocal and instrumental music of Rupert Ignaz Mayr [1646 1712] and Giovanni Legrenzi [1620 1690], two of Biber’s well-known contemporaries.

Choral arrangements of folk songs to traditional tunes, giving an impression of the multiplicity of rhythms and styles which are alive today in Latin America. The choral collection reflects the diversity of rhythms and styles of the popular and folk music of South America. Today choral singing in the majority of the Latin American countries is strongly related to music that originated from popular sources and folk traditions. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the new languages of choral composition have not only derived from the main contemporarymusical trends, but also from the impact of nationalism, which is characterized in Latin American regions by the richness and wide variety of elements that are essential to our folk music. Most of the South American choirs began by singing the traditional music in parts and later on by studying more complex repertoires. That is why the new collection is centered around a selection of excellent choral arrangements and choral versions of popular and traditional melodies. These works have been written and arranged by well-known composers, conductors and teachers who have dedicated most of their lives to choral music.
