Burgon: Acquainted With Night

'Acquainted with Night', is a cycle of six songs, for alto and strings, harp and timpani. The texts are all concerned with different aspects of night. The first song, ?Lullaby? to a poem by Beaumont and Fletcher, seeks to evoke the ?care-charming? powers of sleep. The second, a setting of Robert Frost?s ?Acquainted with the night?, is concerned with the lonely world of a strange city at night and the music is characterised by an insistently repeated figure in the accompaniment. The third song contrasts the calmness of the night with the turbulence in a lover?s mind - the poem is by the Earl of Surrey. ?Out in the dark? a poem by Edward Thomas, is the text of the fourth song. It is in the form of a scherzo and deals with the mystery and strangeness of night, and, as the poet puts it, the ?might? of night. It is, as the poet says, a hymn to night and the chordal nature of the accompaniment suggests this quality. This song leads directly into the last, which is in fact a reprise of the opening ?Lullaby? so completing the cycle.

Lennox Berkeley – I Carry Your Heart With Me

Lennox Berkeley 's I Carry Your Heart With Me for medium Voice and Piano. ' Sometime in 1970 I gave Lennox Berkeley a volume of poems by the American poet E. E. Cummings (1894-1962) since my sister Meriel Dickinson and I were commissioning him towrite a song-cycle for a whole programme of settings of Cummings. At the time he became involved with Chinese poetry and we were delighted with the Chinese Songs, Op. 78. However, a year or so later, in July 1972, Berkeley did set a poem by Cummings. This was ‘i carry your heart with me’ from 95 Poems (1958) and he dedicated the song to the countertenorTay Cheng Jim. The manuscript leaves few questions. Obviously the pedal sustains the sextuplet and triplet groups at the start and finish. It is possible that all the As in bar 32 of the left hand piano part should be flat, although there are clashes like this elsewhere. A few phrase-marks have been added on existing patterns. Commissioned by the Master and Fellows of Balliol College to commemorate the centenary of the death of Benjamin Jowett, Master of Balliol 1870-1893, this work was first performed by the Chapel Choir of Balliol College conducted by Mark Dawes in November 1993.For unaccompanied SATB choir. Peter Maxwell Davies: Maxwell's Reel, With Northern Lights

Miniature Score.This work was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It was first performed on 13th May 1998 London. This piece is based on a genuine old tune 'Maxwell's Strathspey' which the composer found in an 1824 collection of Scottish melodies, and which unfolds at the start of the piece on solo cello. Variations and a bold up-tempo to the quick dance we know as a reel ultimately yield to the magic that has been promised right at the start: the northern lights take over at the end of the piece. Its inspiration comes from a walk to a community event in Hoy Hall, during which Davies saw the lights in the sky pulsing in and out of time with the sounds coming from the hall. Duration 12 minutes. Conductor's score and orchestral parts are available on hire.

Malipiero: Serenata From Sette Canzoni for Tenor Solo with Piano acc.

In 1918-19, Gian Francesco Malipiero wrote a collection of seven songs, commonly known as Sette Canzoni . They were initially intended as a stand-alone work, but became incredibly popular when they were included as the second act of the composer’s opera L’Orfiede . However, in recent years the collection has come to be recognised in its own right as one of the composer’s masterpieces. Like all of the seven songs, the fifth, Serenata , is designed as an individual mini-opera. Scored for a solo Tenor with Piano accompaniment, it tells the story of a young lover serenading his beloved. At the same time, unknown to him, she sits inside lamenting the death of a relative. Serenata has been translated from the original Italian into French by Henry Prunières, and into English by Edwin Evans.
