Symphonic Studies for Timpani

The studies in this book are based on symphonic repertoire and composed for training and guiding the serious timpani student. The book contains plenty of basic practice material but it can also be used as solo material for concert performances.

Easy Pop Studies : for piano solo

The 25 pieces in Easy Pop Studies feature a number of basic techniques from pop music. Various styles from well-known pop artists are explored in turn. Titles like John & Paul and Jack’s Son speak for themselves. This book is a great preparation for Beatmu_ller, also by Fons van Gorp. Although these are solo pieces, playing along with the enclosed CD is good for developing the right ‘drive’ and ‘beat’.

My First String Ensemble

A collection of short, elementary pieces for beginner string ensemble, made up of arrangements of well-known melodies and pieces composed specifically for this work. The pieces, arranged for two violins, cello and optional piano, cover many different styles, continents and periods and have been graded in order of difficulty. All the parts can be played using only first position, with the second violin and cello parts making use of only basic finger positions.

Chain

Chain was composed between June and August 2000 as the test piece for the 2002 European Brass Band Championship. The composer’s idea was to compose a one-movement piece - a work that starts mysteriously and develops in various directions. As his basic material, he chose a figure that is the abbreviation of the European Brass Band Championship: EBBC. This figure is developed in a chain of figures which gradually lead to the climax of the piece.

This unusual concert work, commissioned by the concert band ?Harmonie Concorde? from Sanem in Luxembourg, is built on two basic ideas: the evolution of the economic and social context of this Luxembourg city with its strong mining industry and the European concept, which is clearly present in this very small but prosperous country with its many European institutes. This is musically expressed in a few quotes from the European hymn Ode to Joy, the closing of Beethoven?s Ninth Symphony and from the Te Deum by Charpentier ? widely known as the signature tune for Eurovision broadcasts. A work of true unity.

The basic idea was to form a new group inspired by the American male myths of the seventies: cowboys, Indians, men in leather clothes, soldiers and policemen. No real solo passages are included but rather small chambercombinations, thus offering the opportunity to various players to display their technical and performance skills. The finale recaptures musical material from the first section of the piece and provides a majestic conclusion.

With the first sounds of this composition by Peter Kleine Schaars, the exciting Parisian nightlife immediately comes to mind. The musette takes us to quartier Pigalle, the red-light district of Paris, and when thedoors of the Moulin Rouge open, we hear the recognizable rhythms of a contemporary disco: a combination of the rhythmic cells 8 / 4 and 3 / 14. In addition, the composition has been highlighted with a plentiful and varied use of rhythmic cell 5. Naturally, the themes and accompaniments have been divided equally among all parts.
