Watermelon Sugar

Harry Styles' Watermelon Sugar was a summer hit in 2020 and proved to be a fun song to groove to! This arrangement was made by the renowned German recorder soloist and teacher Ralf Bienioschek for his special „Ralf Bienioschek Signature Edition“ series. The arrangement is for a standard quartet of Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Great Bass Recorder, with additional parts provided Bass Recorder and Sub Bass (Contrabass) Recorder. Optional parts for (Electric) Piano, (Electric) Guitar, Western Guitar, Electric Bass Guitar, (Electric) Drum Set, Cajon/Shaker, Cowbell and a playback (available on our website www.bandmusicshop.com) are also included. Sunset - the sun heads towards the western horizon and slowly slips from view. The sky creates a dazzling display of yellows, oranges, and reds, before turning a calm blue, then purple, and finally black. Such sunsets inspired Jan de Haan to write this piece for solo oboe and concert band. It is dedicated to his daughter, Hermanda.

Swaying in the West Wind : The Resounding Passionate Heartbeat

This piece was commissioned by Japan Ground Self Defense Force Western Army Band. In the programme note for the première the composer wrote: “I am always impressed by the expansive earth and sparkling ocean scenery when I come to Kyushu. I have met many local people here and they are all expressive and energetic. I wrote this dramatic piece to convey to the whole of Japan the memory of my experience here, swaying in the west wind. I wrote this, hoping that the Self Defense Force will forge closer ties with the community through this piece.” Eastern drama felt in the west wind!

Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer, lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are “concertante” in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. This excellent new concert march is sure to become a classic and be performed time and time again.

The music of the Caribbean is a mixture of styles encompassing traditions that reflect the nature of its many islands and ethnic groups which inherited a multitude of rhythms imported by slaves from West Africa. Europeans brought with them Western-style melodies and harmonies, still used today in Trinidadian calypso, a traditional folk genre which gained worldwide popularity thanks to internationally famous artists such as the American singer Harry Belafonte (Calypso, Island in the Sun, Day-O/Banana Boat Song). Fascinated by this music which embodies the very spirit of exoticism, Roland Kernen composed Caribbean Calypso, a composition with softly swaying rhythms which followa gentle and subtle melodic line in a rum and cigar-flavoured atmosphere.

This piece was written to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Takayama Wind Orchestra, who also commissioned it. The historic city of Takayama draws numerous visitors from home and abroad, not just to see its well-preserved old houses and buildings but also because every year several historic processions take place, with beautiful floats. When these ride through the city, age-old melodies are heard played on wooden flutes, accompanied by muted drums. This image is evoked at the beginning of the work, followed by an archaic sounding melody in a typically Japanese pentatonic sequence, that develops throughout. In this challenging piece Eastern and Western influences alternate, creating a sensational and overwhelming musical effect!
