Little Suite : Score for Symphonic Band

This work was written in 2005, prompted by the composer's determination that young members of junior, music school and conservatoire wind ensembles should not be limited to transcriptions for lack of original compositions, especially contemporary ones. The new devices used in the Little Suite are suitable for student players to try out. Indeed, they enjoy them - for instance, purring or whistling into the instrument. Each of the three-or-four-minute movements of this four-movement work can also be performed separately. The titles of the movements are the following: 1. In cheerful mood, 2. Song, 3. Joke, 4. March. This music in modern idiom, full ofinteresting new effects, offers young players an opportunity for enjoyable music-making together, and at the same time prepares them for playing more difficult contemporary works.

Der Steinhauer - The Stonecutter : Thirteen little piano pieces for beginners after a Japanese tale

Individual scenes from an old Japanese story have been set to music by the composer in the form of thirteen easy little piano pieces. The volume contains not only the pieces but also the story (in the original Japanese, and also in Hungarian, English and German), thus the series can also be performed almost as a stage production: one child, as the narrator, reads the story, while at the appropriate points in the story other children play each corresponding piece. This work is being published in the year of the Hungarian-Japanese Cooperation.

György Orbán, born in Transylvania in 1947, is one of the most important members of the middle generation of present-day Hungarian composers: his orchestral and vocal works are performed with great success worldwide. His pieces written for children were originally composed for the excellent piano teacher Ágnes Lakos' publication entitled 'Friendly Piano Tutor'. The works are arranged in order of difficulty, as in the piano tutor. Among these compositions there are several pieces for three or four hands, which the beginner can play together with the teacher or with another pupil. In these pieces we have marked the learner's part with a little child's head. The enclosed CD contains all the pieces in the collection. On the recording, which was made in Hungary in 2010, the pieces are played by pupils of Ágnes Lakos.

The composer is an outstanding authority on brass instruments. In this work too he makes attractive and colourful use of the many sorts of character the trumpet possesses. The opening Fanfare is followed by a lyrical piece, Boating, and then a Dance, in Bulgarian rhythm. In Folk song chorale István Bogár has worked up two Hungarian folk songs. Finally, the series ends with a cheerful, playful piece, Chasing.

This work composed in 1982 is published now in the Leggiero series. The three-movement little composition is a rewarding performance piece for school and amateur orchestras.

Suite : for Concert Band

István Bogár's series of movements intended for youngsters is colourfully instrumented, evocative music, rich in melodic invention, in character it is most closely akin to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker ballet music. In the opening movement (Little march), which is in trio form, little boys wearing paper shakos on their heads and carrying wooden swords play at soldiers. The following movement, Humming, is the only movement in the suite that is calm and in odd-numbered rhythm: in it the children gather flowers in their little baskets, and meanwhile hum pleasant tunes. The third movement (Funny game) is an exciting little three-part form including variations. It is a funny game, withits tempo sometimes speeding up, sometimes slowing down, but by the end really going wild. The title of the finale is Game of tag. The tiny formal sections and interludes in this lively, cheerful music are linked together by a recurring rondo theme, and the chase ends with a brief coda.

Pour Les Enfants - Volume 1 : Little Pieces for Violin and Piano

Béla Bartók composed his four-volume series comprising short pieces for beginner pianists, For Children, between 1908 and 1910. It consists of folksong and nursery song arrangements the first two volumes utilize Hungarian music and the latter two are of Slovak origin. Bartók revised the series during the last years of his life (1943 to 1945). This collection contains easy arrangements of ten pieces from For Children for violin and piano they can either be played separately or one after the other as a suite. These arrangements are by the legendary violinist Ede Zathureczky (1903-1959), who regularly gave concerts with Bartók during the 1930s.

In this work the well-known composer presents the events of a story by the brothers Grimm in the form of very easy piano pieces. This unusual, incomplete story has inspired an unusual musical work: the young players can make up titles for the last eight pieces, and they are also encouraged to note down their thoughts and feelings inspired by the music, or express them in drawings, in the score.

György Orbán (born 1947) is among the most frequently performed contemporary Hungarian composers. His style incorporates a characteristic mix of classical, modern, cinematic, and jazz elements. In addition, he claims he ''loves splashing about in tonality,'' which makes his works accessible to the wider public. Owing to his humor and imagination, he finds an easy path to children, as demonstrated by the popularity of his piano works specifically intended for beginners. He composed close to 70 short children’s pieces for Ágnes Lakos’s four-volume Friendly Piano Tutor (EMBZ14749-14756), later published separately as Enchanted Forest (EMBZ14742). The New Bell includes a further 19 piano pieces for beginners; among others, we encounter a baby elephant now and again (perhaps paying a visit from Debussy’s Children’s Corner?) and we hear the awful clamor of a most outgoing granny’s alarm clock as well as the solemn tolling of a new church-bell. The pieces are arranged in order of difficulty and even include a few items for three hands, which may be played by a pupil with the teacher or another student.
