Urtext edition study score for Ludwig Van Beethoven 's Coriolan Overture Op.62 . Beethoven 's Coriolan Overture Op.62 was inspired by the tragic legend of the Ancient Roman hero Coriolanus. This story enjoyed popularity in the early 1800s as the subject of a play by the Austrian writer Heinrich Joseph von Collin. By the time that Beethoven composed this overture in 1807, however, the play had long since been taken off the programme. Apparently it no longer mattered to the composer whether his music was performed in conjunction with the play or not – and he thus wrote one of the earliest and to-date best-loved concert overtures in musical history. The text of the Beethoven Complete edition was carefully reviewed for this Henle Urtext study edition and there is a new preface.

Six Recorder Sonatas : Performance score with basso continuo (without figured bass realisation)

At the beginning of the 18th century, the recorder enjoyed great popularity as a solo instrument for amateurs. Among these were also the princesses of the English court, for whose musical entertainment and training Handel’s six recorder sonatas were probably written in 1725/26. Only four of them appeared shortly thereafter in print and thus also reached a broader audience: the other two were first discovered for the recorder in the 20th century. Thanks to their melodic and rhythmic incisiveness, the pieces, whose recorder parts are relatively easily mastered, number among the most beautiful written for this instrument. Owing to wide-ranging bass lines and copious figures, the continuo instrument requires a rather well-versed player.

It is almost impossible to tell from listening to them that Bach’s extremely popular concerti for harpsichord were probably his own transcriptions of solo concerti which had originally been composed for violin or a woodwind instrument. The outer movements of the second concerto, in E major, probably written around 1738, sparkle with joy, while the expressive melodic lines of the middle movement, the Siciliano in C-sharp minor, transport the listener to the realm of his Passion music. G. Henle Publishers presents this repertoire standard in an Urtext edition with an extensive commentary. The study edition (HN 7381) features the complete orchestral score: the piano reduction (HN 1381) contains the solo part as well as a very playable piano reduction of the score prepared by Johannes Umbreit for practical use.

For his only opera Leonore/Fidelio, Beethoven wrote four overtures in total. Chronologically, the so-called Leonore Overture no. 3 is the second of the series and perhaps the most performed of all Beethoven’s overtures. During his own lifetime, it was heard not only in the theatre, but also in concert, thereby establishing with the Coriolan and Egmont overtures the new genre of the concert overture. Recognised around the middle of the nineteenth century as a masterpiece, it went on to become the “declared favourite of all orchestras,” as Beethoven biographer Anton Schindler testifies. It now appears as astudy score based on the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition, with its own specially prepared foreword.

Opening with impressive chords, the Sonata in C-major op. 40 no. 1 also offers beginners the chance to savour beautiful melodies and master smaller shifts in position. The Parisian first edition of 1799 leaves the choice of accompanying instrument open. The Hungarian virtuoso pianist Franz Liszt arranged numerous works by other composers for his instrument, in particular excerpts from the operas by his friend and son-in-law Richard Wagner . Liszt turned to 'The Flying Dutchman' twice. Alongside Senta’s ballad he also made a brilliant transposition of the spinning chorus 'Summ und brumm, du gutes Rädchen' from Act 2 for the Piano. His Spinning Song bubbles over with brilliance and has to this day remained one of his best-loved transcriptions. When preparing this Urtext edition, Henle were able to consult the autograph score in Weimar as well as the composer’s own revisions in the archives of the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel.

Composed at the end of 1785, Mozart’s Piano Concerto in E-flat major forms a group of three with the two famous concerti in A major K. 488 and in C minor K. 491, which he completed in March of the following year. What they all have in common is Mozart’s inclusion of Clarinets in the Orchestra for the first time. In this he succeeded to particularly impressive effect with the lyrical passages in the slow sections of the E-flat-major concerto, which was well received by the audience at the first performance. Indeed, his father, Leopold, reports in a letter that Mozart “had to repeat” the Andante immediately. Robert Schumann: Sonata For Violin And Piano In A Minor Op. 105 (Henle Edition)

Robert Schumann ’s Sonata For Piano And Violin In A Minor Op. 105 (also known as Violin Sonata No. 1) was written in only a few days, in September 1851. It consists of three movements – 1. Mit leidenschaftlichem Ausdruck (dotted quarter=68), 2. Allegretto (eighth note =96) and 3. Lebhaft (quarter note = 94), with the main theme present in all of them, linking the whole sonata together. The wealth of imagination, energy of sentiment and depth of thought in the sonata was acknowledged by Wasielewski – fellow musician and Schumann ’s first biographer. This publication takes the composer’s personal copy of the score and the separate Violin part as its principal sources, coming as close to the original intentions of Schumann as possible. An editorial preface by Wiltrud Haug-Freienstein is also included in German, English and French. This Sonata is challenging but rewarding for both Piano and Violin. Total performance time is approximately 18 minutes.

Haydn probably composed his Symphony no. 88 in G major in 1787, just one year after the six so-called Paris symphonies.
