John Jacob Niles: Go 'Way From My Window (Low Voice)

John Jacob Niles (1892-1980) was an American singer, composer, and collector of folk songs. Go ‘Way From My Window was one of his first compositions, written in 1908 when he was just 16 years old, and working on his father’s farm. Inspired by a Negro worker, it was supposedly dedicated to a blond-haired, blue-eyed girl who snubbed his efforts. In 1930, Niles , by then a well-established musician, rearranged the song and gave its first successful public performance. Since then it has been sung again and again the world over. Here it has been arranged for a Low Voice (Alto or Bass) and Piano.

For two Pianos. The Turkish word ' Karsilama ' refers to a popular couple’s folk dance in 9/8 meter. Originally, the word ' Karsilama ' meant 'face-to-face greeting.' Avner Dorman thought it would be appropriate to write a couple’s dance for two pianists, since a Piano duo plays facing each other. The piece is structured as a set of variations. Each presents a different way to dance the 9/8 rhythm, as well as a different way two people might greet each other face-to-face. The Palestinian and Israeli piano-duo Duo Amal gave the premiere of Karsilama in Hamburg, Germany, in 2012, and performs the piece around the world.

Although he wrote the scores for several popular Disney films, he is best remembered for his 1935 setting of The Lord’s Prayer , which has been recorded by John Charles Thomas, Doris Day, Gracie Fields, Elvis Presley, Susan Boyle, and many, many others. It is often said to draw inspiration from Schubert’s Ave Maria , as the melody is very similar, but there is little evidence that the composer intended it that way. It remains very popular for use at weddings and in church services, especially in the United States.

Nathan Milstein: Four Violin Cadenzas

The practice of letting the soloist improvise their own Cadenza during a Concerto had almost died out by the nineteenth century, since composers disliked the way performers frequently used the oppurtunity to showcase their own virtuosic talent rather than working out a cadenza which would suit the music. These four Cadenzas for Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Paganini concerti, however, have been carefully worked out and performed by the modern violinist Nathan Milstein. They are extremely challenging but avoid 'empty virtuosity' - they have real musical value, as one would expect from one of the finest Violinsts of the Twentieth Century. They can be used for performance or as a study aid to the art of Cadenza improvisation. All four Concertos have been recorded by Milstein.

Franz Schubert: Sonata Per Arpeggione D.821 (Viola/Piano)

The 'Arpeggione' was a guitar-like instrument tuned in the same way as the guitar, but held between the knees and played with a bow. The instrument possessed a warm quality and it was this attribute which Schubert exploited in the sonata which he wrote for it in 1824. Schubert's manuscript on which this edition is based contains an alternative violin part which dates from the same period. To avoid an excess of leger lines and clef changes Schubert wrote the arpeggioned part almost exclusively in the treble clef which the performer was expected to read an octave lower than written. The work was edited for the viola when it came into its own as a solo instrument around the turn of the century.

Alessandro Scarlatti (1660 – 1725) was an Italian Baroque composer, especially famous for his operas and chamber cantatas. He is even considered the founder of the Neapolitan school of opera. Scarlatti 's music forms an important link between the early Baroque Italian vocal styles of the 17th century, with their centres in Florence, Venice and Rome, and the Classical school of the 18th century. His legacy was carried further by his two composer sons, Domenico Scarlatti and Pietro Filippo Scarlatti. Three Sonatas For Double Bass are slightly simplified in this arrangement to be tackled by intermediate players (Grade 4-6) of the Double Bass and the Piano. The Baroque tunes and rhythms will help to advance playing abilities in a highly enjoyable way.

Sempre Avanti , whose title translates as "Ever Forward", was written for the Bloomfield Youth Band and premiered by that ensemble on June 17, 2005. " Sempre Avanti " was the motto of Tony Marcopoto, a longtime supporter and fan of the Youth Band and a retired New Jersey Music Educator who taught at Newark's Arts High School for nearly 40 years. Well into his eighties, he practiced his Clarinet for an hour each day. Two years before he passed away, he suffered a stroke which paralyzed the entire right side of his face. Despite this unfortunate setback, Tony never gave up and, to everyone's amazement, found a way to not only play the Clarinet, but to once again resume his normal routine of an hour of practice each day. Tony's "ever forward" spirit was remarkable and serves as a terrific example for everyone.

Biblical Songs were composed in just 21 days in 1894. They were one of the few pieces of religious music that Dvorak composed, and are believed to have been stimulated by the recent death of a number of his close friends, including Tchaikovsky. The expressive text is partnered by a relatively simple musical setting: the beauty of the work is the way in which the composer articulates such a broad range of emotions while remaining quiet and contemplative in nature. The cycle of 10 songs is known for blatant and unexpected key changes, as well as their pentatonic influences. Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) was best known for his New World Symphony, composed in the short time he spent in America – the rest of his career was spent in his native Bohemia and the rest of Europe.

Johann Strauss II: On The Beautiful Blue Danube Op.314

Johann Strauss? status as an internationally recognised Austrian icon began with the success of his waltz, An der schönen, blauen Donau or On The Beautiful Blue Danube, at the Paris Exhibition of 1867. This is one of the most well-known, infectious pieces of music and it has been played the world over and its melody is instantly recognisable today. Like most of his waltzes, it features five distinct mini-waltzes, each with two sections. Strauss's wealth of melodic material provides great contrast; waltz sections featuring melodies with substantial leaps give way to those with linear tunes within a smaller range. Today, the slow introduction and build-up to the main theme is the ultimate tease, but at its first performance, however, this opening probably produced a different effect: a heightened sense of anticipation, and curiosity about when the actual dance would begin.
