It is ideal for the alternating bass technique i.e. Mississippi John Hurt's style of playing.   In this lesson, we start by learning an arrangement of Marshall Owens' 1930s recording of Try Me One More Time . This was originally played in an Open G tuning but is here arranged in standard tuning using a John Hurt approach. Not all blues from the 1920s and 1930s were fingerpicked. Jim Jackson was a popular Memphis songster who basically strummed his Guitar. But his repertoire was full of wonderful songs. Stefan Grossman has taken his Wild About My Loving and has tried to keep the original feel by combining a strum approach intermingled with fingerpicking the melody. Little Hat Jones was an amazing fingerstyle bluesman.   His Bye Bye Baby Blues was played in the key of G. Here his version is fully transcribed note for note. Blind Boy Fuller recorded many blues in the key of G. In this lesson we'll tackle three of his arrangements: Baby Let Me Lay It On You, Baby Quit Your Low Down Ways and I Crave My Pigmeat . We study his playing note for note but also explore variations. Brownie McGhee: Born With The Blues 1966-1992

Walter Brown Mcghee (1915-1996) was an articulate spokesman for the blues who, in partnership with Sonny Terry, proselytized the buoyant Piedmont-blues-style to folk audiences a decade before most ever heard of the Mississippi Delta. Though he is largely associated with the folk boom which made Sonny & Brownie familiar names worldwide, Brownie's recording career began in Chicago in 1940; the second song in this retrospective, Me and My Dog, was Brownie's first issued recording. Other reminders here of Brownie's pre-War blues career are Death of Blind Boy Fuller (written to order on the occasion of Fuller's 1941 demise) and the Fuller-influenced Pawn Shop Blues. Tennessee born, Carolina-influenced, New York based in his folk boom glory and a Californian at the time of his death, Brownie showed a wide stylistic range from turn-of-the-century ragtime (Come On Keep It Coming) to the lyrical sophistication of such original songs as Conversation With A River. His flair for the dramatic aside and autobiographical insight augment passionate vocals and splendid guitar work in 14 performances, a moving retrospective of an artist too long taken for granted.

Sonny Terry: Whoopin' The Blues DVD

Sonny Terry started playing harmonica in his teens, as a blind street musician in North Carolina. After a stint with a medicine show, he hooked up with the popular ragtime singer/guitarist Blind Boy Fuller. When he was 23, he made his recording debut, backing up Fuller. Barely a year later in 1938, he was wowing New York audiences at Carnegie Hall, appearing solo as part of John Hammond's Spirituals to Swing concert. Sonny Terry died in 1986, leaving behind many recordings and numerous fans -- as well as harmonica players trying to duplicate his virtuosity. He was a true originator and a powerful entertainer.
