The Incomparable Fiddler: Svend Asmussen 100 Years (DVD/5 CDs)

Svend Asmussen celebrates his 100th birthday on February 28, 2016. Storyville Records celebrates the Danish Jazz legend's centenary with a 5 CD and 1 DVD box set which explores his musical production through the years. The first CD features early 1937-1944 recordings, where Asmussen finally decided on music as his occupation for life and began gaining international recognition with his elegant swing and refined arrangements. The second CD features 1953 and 1958 recordings from Hamburg, where Asmussen ’s profound musicality and jazz skillfulness shine. On CD3, Asmussen collaborates with violinist colleague Stephane Grappelli, and their different phrasings compliment each other. We also find previously unreleased tracks from a 1985 Paris session with the Georges Arvanitas Trio, a complement to the critically acclaimed “Embraceable” concert CD from the same occasion. On CD4, Asmussen and American legend Stuff Smith play a concert together in Copenhagen, the two clearly enjoying each other’s company. CD5 features the renowned 1996 concert “Fit as a Fiddle”, where Asmussen masterfully combines the insistent energy of his youth with the experience and musical grandeur he has gained from a lifetime of playing. On the DVD, Asmussen plays a lively 1986 concert in Copenhagen’s famous Jazzhus Montmartre with prominent musicians such as bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and pianist Kenny Drew. “ Svend Asmussen is light, precise, and yet profound; a consummate entertainer, a creative thinker, and an artist. And that combination is rare! ” ( Finnish jazzviolinist Ari Poutianinen, Jazz Special 149 )

Johnny Griffin: From Johnny Griffin With Love (3CD/DVD)

Art Tatum: TatumArt - Live Performances 1934-1956 (10 CDs + DVD)

Art Tatum: TatumArt - Live Performances 1934-1956 (10 CDs + DVD)

The incomparable pianist Art Tatum died more than fifty years ago, yet his amazing playing and recordings left an indelible mark on jazz and continue to astonish, inspire, and set a seemingly unattainable pinnacle of excellence for today's pianists in all genres of music. For many, their first hearing of Tatum was a transforming moment. This ten CD Tatum box contains over twelve hours of his music, almost all of it recorded live. On most of these occasions he was free to play what he wanted to for as long as he wished, to talk to his friends, and even sing along when the spirit moved him. His competitive spirit burst forth when he played with others. As always, the articulation and the conceptions were impeccable. The vast majority of the tracks on CD's one through nine have been previously issued only on the Storyville label. Twenty-one of the twenty-three tracks on CD ten included here have never been issued before.Because Art Tatum was legally blind, most written scores of his performances were first laboriously transcribed from disc recordings, and later from CDs. There is an almost cottage industry of pianists attempting to play some of these, or their own transcriptions. It is extraordinary that so many pianists have tried to play the music of Art Tatum, even though it was not composed by him. Of course, although Art was not a composer in the traditional sense, he was always re-composing the American popular song by creating new harmonies, textures, rhythms, and enhancements. The results were models of structure even when totally and newly improvised. This box presents the Piano genius as you've never heard him before.

Teddy Wilson: Solo Teddy Wilson Big Band - Box Set

The Boswell Sisters Collection

The Boswell Sisters Collection

The Boswell Sisters inauspiciously launched their recording career in New Orleans, their hometown, on March 22, 1925, but their first release, I?m Gonna Cry and Nights When I?m Lonely didn?t shake any rafters. Early local appearances featured Connie, the eldest, on cello, Helvetia ("Vet") on violin, and Martha at the piano, but the city?s jazz environment made Connie and Vet switch to saxophone and banjo, respectively. At first, the singing was almost incidental, but it became their ticket to national attention five years later when they moved to New York and became a fixture on radio shows. The Boswell Sisters were notable for their tight harmony as well as their unique ability to modulate pitch and give familiar songs a new melodic twist. They were the cutting edge that inspired future groups, including The Andrews Sisters, who began their own career by emulating them, even down to their Southern accent. The exuberant sisters recorded a string of hits in the 1930s, sometimes teaming up with fellow vocalists, such as Bing Crosby and The Mills Brothers. Instrumental accompaniments are by some of the day?s most popular musicians and bands, including The Dorsey Brothers, Don Redman, Red Nichols, and Benny Goodman. Considering their popularity and impact, the sisters had a relatively brief run, disbanding in 1936 when Martha and Vel married outside of the music industry and decided to give priority to family life. Connie, however, continued and enjoyed a successful solo career. This boxed set contains the entire Boswell Sisters output of commercially released recordings?a remarkable set of performances that paved the way for the vocal trio genre. It also includes a bonus DVD featuring more extraordinary performances.

Duke Ellington: The Duke Box 2

Duke Ellington: The Duke Box 2

The Duke Box 2 picks up the story of the great Duke Ellington band in the early 1950s and spans the next twenty years or so of a remarkable output. This collection is to some extent shaped by the advent of the LP and the longer tracks it enabled and encouraged. That technological shift came in a period when Ellington would lose the three of his stellar sidemen: Johnny Hodges, Lawrence Brown and Sonny Greer. As it turned out, their replacements (Willie Smith, Britt Woodman and Louie Bellson) and other new blood only served to re-energise the band as it approached the 25th anniversary of its initial engagement at The Cotton Club. The box set includes a high-quality 27-page booklet including a large selection of never before seen photos of The Duke and his band members in their prime time. Spanning the years in which Ellington regularly toured Europe and Scandinavia, The Duke Box 2 offers a rich selection of performances illustrating a tirelessly inventive musical spirit on tour with changing personnel and occasional guest artists. CD3 features never before released live recordings from a 1963 concert in Gröna Lund, Stockholm—a veritable treasure for the committed Ellington fan. The box also includes the well-renowned Jaywalker (CD5) and Piano Player (CD4) albums whose music always deserves a re-visiting. Among other gems are late 1970s recordings from New York, some of the last music Ellington ever put out. The bonus DVD combines a series of short films of the Ellington band in action and despite the sound being recorded first and the performances showing the band miming, this curiosum offers a fascinating glimpse of The Duke in action, and the audio is of course technically excellent. The achievement of Duke Ellington exists on a variety of levels. The closer you examine it, the more complex and multi-faceted it appears to be. The first great composer of jazz, the most popular African-American bandleader, the influential pianist, who made light of his piano contribution, the magician who assisted the musical formation of several key individual contributors but who nevertheless retained the identity of his band over a 50-year period. As a portrait of a sublime and inexhaustible musician thriving in the second half of a long and distinguished career, The Duke Box 2 is surely a must-have collection for all true admirers of the inimitable Duke Ellington !
