This triple-CD collection (spanning the years 1937-46) not only includes largely unheard facets of Stan Kenton?s early musical life, it also offers the greatest collection of very rare Kenton performances to date. Among the rare sessions included here are those from 1938 with the Vido Musso Orchestra and Herb Jeffrey, both of which pre-date the creation of Kenton?s own orchestra. Also included are some of the earliest performances by future jazz superstars such as Art Pepper, Stan Getz and Shelly Manne, plus the very first recording of vocalist June Christy. Also to be found here are occasional commentaries by Frank Sinatra and pertinent recollections by Kenton himself. Most of the music included on these three CD?s (74 numbers in all!) is original material of the post-swing/ ?early modern? genre, plus a few evergreens.

The three sessions here were recorded in N.Y.C. in 1945 ? 2 live sessions (Apollo Theatre and Zanzibar Club) plus one studio session (Radio City Music Hall). The 143 minutes (44 tunes) of music on this double-CD have never been released before. The repertoire is classic Ellington/Strayhorn material ? including one Strayhorn medley and two suites (?Trio In Blue? and ?Perfume Suite?) - plus several tunes which were never recorded commercially. Recorded at the end of WWII, the purpose of these three programs ? besides providing wonderful music ? was to promote the sale of U.S. Treasury bonds to help the war effort. A major attribute of this double-CD is the inclusion of several tunes that Ellington never recorded commercially, like ?Fickle Fling?, ?Hollywood Hangover? and ?I?d Do It All Over Again?. The great musicianship and enthusiasm of Ellington?s orchestra includes countless fine solos ? especially with Johnny Hodges and Rex Stewart ? and features some great vocals by Al Hibbler, Kay Davis and Joya Sherrill.

This CD was recorded in 2002 and combines hard-hitting Chicago blues with a more subtle, jazzy west-coast style blues. On this CD, homage is paid to leading bluesmen like T-Bone Walker, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Muddy Waters and Howlin? Wolf, plus jazz guitar giants Kenny Burrell and Grant Green ? all of whom have influenced Barry Levenson. All the tunes are Levenson originals, and the style varies from tunes like ?Hard Times Won? with a Howlin? The numbers average over eight minutes in length, allowing Ben and his fellow soloists to really stretch out. This CD was recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark, and consists of a live concert in Jazzhus Montmartre in 1965 and a radio studio session (with violinist Svend Asmussen) in 1966. The repertoire on the CD (74 min./13 tunes) consists of some standards (George & Ira Gershwin, Kurt Weil, Duke Ellington) and five Stuff Smith originals. The two rhythm groups are comprised of top Danish jazz musicians, plus the American piano star, Kenny Drew. The relatively long playing-time of the tracks allows Stuff Smith, Svend Asmussen and Kenny Drew to do some extended soloing. Many jazz fans will agree that Stuff Smith is the best jazz violinist of all time, and this CD presents him at his very best. The overwhelming energy, creativity, drive and humor in his performance is further enhanced by an unmatched musical virtuosity.

The music on these two CD?s (51 tunes) has never been released before. The music is taken from 4 radio broadcasts in New York City in 1945 ? part live and part in the radio studio. Aside from providing great big band jazz for the radio audience, the point of these broadcasts was also for Duke Ellington to sell war bonds in the final year of World War II. The repertoire consists mostly of well-known Ellington numbers, plus a few rarities. These radio broadcasts are particularly important because commercial studio recordings were banned during World War II. One tune on CD 2 ? "I Miss Your Kiss", featuring the great trombone work of Lawrence Brown ? was never recorded commercially. Other highpoints are Johnny Hodges? smooth alto sax on "Mood to be Wooed", and Rex Stewart?s trumpet work on "Emancipation Celebration".

This CD is a collection of classic melodies from the repertoire of Ben Webster?s famous employer of many years, Duke Ellington. The CD is compromised of three live radio sessions with the Danish Radio Big Band In 1969 & 1971, plus three live concert sessions with three different backing-trios (Finland in 1967, Denmark in 1969 and Sweden in 1972). Two of the tracks ? with Clark Terry, Kenny Drew, Red Mitchell and Bobby Brooks ? are previously unissued. Aside from one tune. All the performances with the Danish Radio Big Band are Based on Ellington?s original scores. The quartet sessions are also great, including two ?reunions? ? one with Ben?s boss from the early 30?s, Teddy Wilson, and the other with fellow Ellington alumnus Clark Terry. That Ben Webster was one of the undisputed jazz-greats on the tenorsaxophone- both in a big band and small group context ? is amply demonstrated on this fine CD.

This first-time CD release is comprises two LPs recorded between 1978 and 1980. Grover Mitchell was first trombonist in the Count Basie Orchestra from 1962-70 and 1980-84, and he has led the Basie Orchestra since 1995. The musical style on the CD is Basie-style swing big band music with a strong blues influence. Grover Mitchell wrote all but four of the 17 numbers on the CD, and arranged all the tunes. Along with the brilliant writing and arranging by Grover Mitchell, Mitchell's big band includes major Basie musicians (trumpeter Al Aarons and trombonist Henry Coker) plus trombonist Britt Woodman from Duke Ellington's orchestra. Also featured are major West Coast musicians Buddy Collette (flute, alto and tenor) and Red Callender (bass). Grover Mitchell's big band is not unsurprisingly reminiscent of the Count Basie Orchestra, with the same tight-but-loose swinging style, a tasty blues influence and top musicianship.

These two shows were made in Hollywood in 1943 to be broadcast exclusively to U.S. troops overseas during W.W.II.The two main acts on these programs are Louis Armstrong with a big band and Henry ?Red? Allen?s sextet, plus a couple of vocalists (Ivie Anderson & Jewel Paige), a couple of drum soloists (Lee Young & Paul Barbarin) and a couple of comedy skits. The 21 numbers on this one hour-long CD are being released here for the first time. The musical repertoire is largely dixieland and traditional jazz, along with some popular tunes of the day. On the first show, Louis Armstrong performs classic versions of On The Sunny Side of the Street and Dear Old Southland, as well as a hilarious comedy skit with Jack Benny and Eddie ?Rochester? Anderson. On the second show, Henry Allen performs with his long-time trombone colleague J.C. Higginbotham, together with a first-rate New Orleans rhythm section powered by Paul Barbarin and bassist Benny Moten.The show?s momentous climax teams top clarinetist Barney Bigard with Henry Allen and Paul Barbarin on Rug Cutter?s Swing.

Creme Fraiche Big Band was the creation of Danish trumpeter Lars Togeby, and this is their only recording, very rare on LP, and re-released on CD here for the first time.The music blends modern big-band sounds with avant garde, latin and funk, where the rhythm group plays a central role. All the tunes on this CD are composed and arranged by the band?s leader, Lars Togeby. Creme Fraiche existed for only a few years in the seventies, and the music on this CD was recorded in 1978. The band is comprised of the "creme" of Danish jazz musicians, plus the world-famous American trumpeter Tim Hagans ? who, at this time, was a young musician on his way up.Creme Fraiche was one of the most exciting modern "electric" jazz and funk big band in Europe in the seventies. The music on this CD is brilliantly performed with boundless energy, drive, and pulsing rhythm, and gives plenty of room for the exciting soloists. Bandleader Stan Kenton was very enthusiastic about Creme Fraiche and wanted to record the band on his own label.
