Bud Powell was a jazz pianist of rare talent, perhaps unique in his ability to inject vocal inflections into his improvisational playing. He reached a peak by the late 1940s although sadly by the 1950s he seemed to be succumbing to the mental illness that had plagued him all his life. Unexpectedly his career had a sporadic revival after he moved to France in 1959. Cared for by a friend, Bud Powell still proved capable of giving performances occasionally as brilliantly fluent as his finest from the 1940s. One of these performances were immortalized on this recording from Jazzhus Montmartre in 1962.

The 15 tunes (69 min.) on this CD were recorded live in concert in Denver, Colorado, in 1966. Six of the numbers have never been previously released; the rest were originally released on LP on the Pumpkin record label. Don Ewell plays stride piano, strongly influenced by Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller. The repertoire on the CD is based on compositions by the great stride pianists Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and Earl Hines.Don Ewell did not do much recording and therefore, as prominent jazz journalist Alun Morgan says: "We are fortunate to have this (CD) representing Don Ewell at his best." Ewell, himself, was very pleased that night in Denver, Colorado; everything was right:the atmosphere, the piano, the recording and, not least of all - the band and the music. Besides being a great stride piano player, Ewell could definitely play the blues - just listen to his version of "See See Rider" on this CD

Recording with When Granny Sleeps was like having a fine dinner and overnight stay with a warm and hospitable friend of a family. They had their music together and well rehearsed; they knew what they wanted from me (and Ben on keyboards); and they allowed me to do what I do best. The music itself had memories of the period when I was with Miles Davis in the 1970s - a certain kind of funky looseness with the guitar front and center a lot of the time. This band, if they stay together will definitely make some waves. Meanwhile, you will really have fun with this music. David Liebman.

This CD is a collection of classic melodies from the repertoire of Ben Webster?s famous employer of many years, Duke Ellington. The CD is compromised of three live radio sessions with the Danish Radio Big Band In 1969 & 1971, plus three live concert sessions with three different backing-trios (Finland in 1967, Denmark in 1969 and Sweden in 1972). Two of the tracks ? with Clark Terry, Kenny Drew, Red Mitchell and Bobby Brooks ? are previously unissued. Aside from one tune. All the performances with the Danish Radio Big Band are Based on Ellington?s original scores. The quartet sessions are also great, including two ?reunions? ? one with Ben?s boss from the early 30?s, Teddy Wilson, and the other with fellow Ellington alumnus Clark Terry. That Ben Webster was one of the undisputed jazz-greats on the tenorsaxophone- both in a big band and small group context ? is amply demonstrated on this fine CD.

These two shows were made in Hollywood in 1943 to be broadcast exclusively to U.S. troops overseas during W.W.II.The two main acts on these programs are Louis Armstrong with a big band and Henry ?Red? Allen?s sextet, plus a couple of vocalists (Ivie Anderson & Jewel Paige), a couple of drum soloists (Lee Young & Paul Barbarin) and a couple of comedy skits. The 21 numbers on this one hour-long CD are being released here for the first time. The musical repertoire is largely dixieland and traditional jazz, along with some popular tunes of the day. On the first show, Louis Armstrong performs classic versions of On The Sunny Side of the Street and Dear Old Southland, as well as a hilarious comedy skit with Jack Benny and Eddie ?Rochester? Anderson. On the second show, Henry Allen performs with his long-time trombone colleague J.C. Higginbotham, together with a first-rate New Orleans rhythm section powered by Paul Barbarin and bassist Benny Moten.The show?s momentous climax teams top clarinetist Barney Bigard with Henry Allen and Paul Barbarin on Rug Cutter?s Swing.

Miscellaneous Miles Davis from 1955 to 1960. There are three recordings from different European tours. On the first tour he recorded ?Lady Be Good? in Zurich, Switzerland with Lester Young and the Rene Urtreger trio. On the second tour he was in Stuttgart, Germany and recorded with Erwin Lehn Orchestra and on the third tour he was in Zurich, Switzerland with John Coltrane, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. In October 1957 he was in New York and played at ?Birdland? with Bobby Jasper, Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. July 17, 1955 he recorded at Newport Jazz Festival. George Wein had organized a group with Zoot Sims, Gerry Mulligan, Thelonious Monk, Percy Heath and Connie Kay and asked Miles to sit in with the group for a couple of numbers. The group played a few tunes and then Miles joined the group. They played ?Now's The Time? and then Thelonious Monk?s ??Round Midnight?. Miles solo made such an impact on the audience and critics. He got a standing ovation and his career received an enormous lift.

I have known Richard for many years. We worked together in Count Basie?s Orchestra in 1967. We teamed up years later in a quintet and I found him to be a top jazz vocalist with his own unique style. Count Basie realized this many, many years ago. After listening to this CD, with Richard singing with both big bands and small groups, I?m impressed by what a fine job he did putting this record together. Richard is truly a versatile performer and it is a real pleasure to hear all these different recordings throughout the years. Richard, you?re a great artist. It?s been a pleasure playing with you.
